It. Was. Incredible.

May 19, 2023, was a day that more than 1,000 Texans will be talking about for a long time. The reason: at the Texas Black Expo Corporate Luncheon held at Houston’s Marriott Marquis Hotel, NBA veteran basketball player turned business mogul Earvin “Magic” Johnson wowed the audience with captivating stories of his experiences in building his empire.

The celebrity businessman’s keynote delivered even more than the audience could have anticipated, as he offered professional advice for anyone, whether a business owner or corporate worker, on how to level up and maximize their potential, in addition highlighting strategies, supporters and spiritual favor that helped him become the humble and generous magnate of the business world that he is today.

Johnson’s speech held the audience with rapt attention as his down-to-earth, personable persona shone through every word. When he finally brought his captivating presentation to an end, Johnson asked everyone to stand and join hands, and he offered a sincere, heartfelt prayer for the Texas Black Expo and its continued ability to make an even greater impact on small businesses and wealth creation in the Black community.

Everyone in attendance seemed to share the same sentiment as they exited the stylish venue decorated by MWBE design firm Styled & Staged Spaces: if you missed this corporate event with Magic Johnson, you missed something special.

This year’s TBE Corporate Luncheon, for which crowd favorite KHOU news anchors Len Cannon and Mia Gradney served as emcees, was hosted as the kickoff of the 20th anniversary Texas Black Expo Summer Celebration, a three-day celebration that included corporate, empowerment and consumer and entertainment events.

Many of the corporate world’s business elite attended the event; the massive banquet room was filled with tables sponsored by companies like Amazon, Hess, Centerpoint, Chevron, Chase, Cigna, Comerica Bank, Coca-Cola, Shell, Comcast, Academy Sports & Outdoor, Comfort Systems, Regions Bank, Memorial Hermann, Enterprise, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Halliburton Radio One, Southwest Airlines, and scores more.

The event also served as the launchpad for the Texas Black Expo’s B.O.O.M. (Building Our Own Marketplace) initiative, which is designed to create entrepreneurs who grow wealth and create other entrepreneurs. The initiative, which is projected to birth 1,340 new businesses, create 2,800 new jobs, and empower 2,500 students through financial literacy, is driven by Texas Black Expo’s motto that “economic prosperity creates awesome communities.”

Houston’s corporate power players also made sure they were represented with tables at the event, including Principle Partnering Group (PPG LLC), Frenchy’s, and McConnell, Jones, Lanier & Murphy.

Additionally, education were well represented by the presence of Texas Southern University, Prairie View A&M University, Rice University, Texas A&M School of Pharmacy, Lamar University, Houston Community College, San Jacinto College, Lone Star College, and HISD, among others.

The sports world got in on the action as well, with organizations like the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Texans present at the event.

Nearly 20 Texas Southern University Student Ambassadors served as guides and hostesses for the highly anticipated event. Corporate sponsors offered seating at their tables for the students who are actively in the process of developing their vision for a future in corporate America. After the event, the TSU Student Ambassadors expressed that the opportunity to sit and mingle with the corporate professionals up close and personal over lunch was a priceless experience.

In addition to Johnson’s fascinating presentation, Texas Black Expo founder Jerome D. Love provided reflections on the organization’s accomplishments over the past 20 years and thanked corporate sponsors, community supporters and all of those who contributed to TBE’s success along the way. Video presentations featuring some of the many businesses that have benefited from Texas Black Expo financial support and programming gave faces and personalities to the individuals that have been significantly impacted over the years by the organization.

Finally, at the conclusion of the luncheon, nearly 20 guests who had purchased raffle tickets throughout the luncheon received prized autographed basketballs, autographed basketball jerseys, hotel and spa packages, and at least 10 fortunate winners won round-trip airline tickets.

The 2023 Texas Black Expo Corporate Luncheon was an unforgettable afternoon to remember, and planning for next year’s Corporate Luncheon is underway!
